Why Wool Felt? The Material Behind Our New Mamutino Collection

At Mamutino, we believe that the materials used in children’s products matter just as much as the way they look.

As we develop our new collection, we have chosen to work with wool felt a natural material valued for its texture, durability and distinctive tactile feel.

But what exactly is wool felt, how is it made, and why have we chosen it for Mamutino?

What is wool felt?

Wool felt is made from natural wool fibres.

Unlike woven fabrics, felt does not need to be made by weaving individual threads together. Instead, wool fibres naturally interlock when they are exposed to a controlled combination of moisture, heat, pressure and movement.

The tiny scales on the surface of wool fibres begin to bind together, gradually creating a dense and stable sheet of material.

The result is a fabric with a completely different character from many synthetic felts.

It feels warm, tactile and substantial in the hand, while retaining the softness and flexibility that make felt particularly suitable for carefully designed children’s products.

A natural material with character

One of the reasons we were drawn to wool felt is its natural texture.

Each sheet has a subtle depth and softness that is difficult to reproduce with synthetic materials. Rather than appearing perfectly flat or artificial, wool felt retains the visual character of the fibres from which it is made.

For our designs, this matters.

We want Mamutino products to encourage children to touch, explore, match, move and discover. Material is therefore not simply a background to the design it becomes part of the experience.

The slightly textured surface of wool felt gives small hands something tangible to explore while helping individual shapes and layers feel distinct.

Why we chose wool felt

Our new collection has been designed around a few simple principles: thoughtful design, tactile play, carefully selected materials and long-term quality.

Wool felt fits naturally into that approach.

Its structure allows us to create layered shapes, stitched details and interactive elements while maintaining a soft, handcrafted appearance.

It also gives us the opportunity to work with a calm, considered colour palette rather than relying on highly saturated synthetic colours.

For Mamutino, the aim is not to create the loudest children’s product on the shelf.

We want to create something children enjoy discovering and parents are happy to keep in their homes.

Designed for tactile play

Young children learn through their senses.

Touching different surfaces, moving objects, matching shapes and manipulating small elements all form part of early exploration.

Felt is particularly interesting for this kind of play because it combines softness with structure.

It can be layered, stitched, folded and shaped while remaining pleasant to handle.

That makes it well suited to the kind of quiet, hands-on activities we are developing for the new Mamutino collection.

Why development takes time

Creating a children’s product involves considerably more than developing an attractive design.

For us, child safety is a priority throughout the development process.

This means looking carefully at materials, construction methods, stitching, individual components and the way a finished product is likely to be used by a child.

It also means allowing additional time for specialist product testing.

Before our new products are released for sale, the finished production version will need to undergo the appropriate independent safety testing required for the markets in which it will be sold.

This stage cannot simply be rushed.

Testing, reviewing results and making any necessary adjustments all add time to the development process but they are an essential part of producing a children’s product responsibly.

More than choosing a beautiful material

Choosing wool felt was only the beginning.

We have been comparing different material samples, thicknesses, colours and construction methods to find the combination that works best for the finished product.

Small differences can have a significant effect on how a page feels, how well a shape holds its form and how accurately individual pieces can be produced.

This is one of the reasons our new collection is taking shape gradually.

We would rather spend additional time refining the product now than rush something into production simply to meet an earlier launch date.

The next chapter of Mamutino

Our new collection represents a different direction for Mamutino.

We are focusing increasingly on carefully designed tactile products made from wool felt, beginning with our new activity book collection and expanding from there.

Over the coming weeks, we will share more of the process from materials and colours to individual details, production and testing.

The finished product is still taking shape.

And for us, that process is an important part of creating something worth waiting for.
